Sports have been an integral part of human culture for centuries, providing a platform for individuals to showcase their physical prowess, strategic thinking, and competitive spirit. Over the last 100 years, sports have evolved significantly in terms of rules, equipment, training techniques and global reach.

A century ago, sports were largely localized events with limited participation. Athletes competed primarily for the love of the game rather than financial gain or international fame. The rules were often flexible and varied from one region to another. For instance, football was still in its formative years with different forms being played across the globe.

However, as time progressed and communication improved globally through technology advancements such as radio broadcasting and television coverage; sports began to take on a more standardized form. Rules became more defined and universally accepted across different regions enabling international competitions like the Olympics to become truly global events.

The evolution of equipment has also had a profound impact on how sports are played today compared to 100 years ago. Modern materials science has allowed for lighter yet stronger equipment that can withstand greater stresses while enhancing performance. For example, tennis rackets used to be made from wood but are now manufactured using lightweight composite materials which allow players to hit harder shots with greater control.

Training techniques too have undergone tremendous changes over this period driven by advances in medical science and understanding of human physiology. A century ago athletes trained mostly based on personal experience or anecdotal advice from coaches but today there is a wealth of scientific knowledge available that helps athletes optimize their training routines in order to maximize performance while minimizing injuries.

Furthermore, professionalization of sports has led not only increased competition but also elevated levels of athleticism never seen before. Today’s athletes are full-time professionals who dedicate their lives entirely towards honing their skills unlike yesteryears when athletes would often juggle sporting careers along with other professions due to lack of adequate financial support from sport itself.

Finally yet importantly is the role that media has played in the evolution of sports. The ability to broadcast events live across the globe has brought sports into living rooms, making it a shared experience for millions and creating a sense of global community. This has not only increased the fan base but also made athletes household names, turning them into role models for future generations.

In conclusion, over the last 100 years sports have evolved from localized pastimes to global phenomena that captivate audiences worldwide. As we look towards the future, one can only anticipate further evolution as technology continues to advance and our understanding of human performance improves.
